Other Litmags We Love

One of the best things about literary magazines is that there are SO many out there - themed and unthemed, print and digital, quarterly and daily, big and small. With such a variety of places to look, you're sure to find your community somewhere.

But on the flip side, that also means it can sometimes be overwhelming to know exactly where to start. Whether you're a writer, artist, or reader, it's hard to keep track of all the offerings out there, to know where to submit and where to invest your money if you want to subscribe or support.

Which is why we're here to give you some ideas! We know that Wizards in Space is obviously your #1 fave and you've definitely preordered our upcoming issue already, so we've put together a small list of other litmags that we adore for their mission, aesthetic, and content. Whether you're looking for your next great read or the perfect home for your latest piece, these 8 magazines are a great place to begin!

FIYAH Magazine

FIYAH is a quarterly speculative fiction magazine that features stories by & about Black people of the African Diaspora. As a fiercely intersectional magazine and community hub for Black creators, FIYAH is a big name in the litmag world for big reasons. Not only are their issues filled with stunning and imaginative content, but they also post contributor interviews, reviews, and a custom playlist for each one! And of course, they're the home of a fantastic conference, FIYAHCON, which is an accessible and inclusive event with a wide variety of craft panels. Be sure to check them out at http://fiyahlitmag.com and follow them on social media @fiyahlitmag.

Sword & Kettle | Corvid Queen

Sword & Kettle Press is a self-described feminist speculative press dedicated to uplifting diverse perspectives & creators, and their literary journal Corvid Queen offers these principles in the form of weekly fairy-tale features. If you're into retellings, reimaginings, and critical re-examinations of classic myths, this is the litmag for you! The pride this team takes in their creators is evident through the lush images and loving words they use to share these stories, and we've been huge fans of all of Sword & Kettle's projects for quite some time! Check out Corvid Queen for your dose of dark whimsy at http://corvidqueen.com, and give S&K a follow on socials @swordandkettle.

Oyster River Pages

Oyster River Pages is an online literary magazine dedicated to publishing voices that speak to what it means to be alive in this world, prioritizing diversity of voices & content and embracing the ways in which the personal becomes political. They put out one gorgeous issue per year, as well as a special themed issue designed and created by their interns; they also offer some intriguing online courses around craft and storytelling. We especially love ORP's dedication to maintaining a spark of hope in their publications - though many stories touch on darker or more serious themes, there are always optimistic pieces to brighten up your reading experience. You can check out ORP at http://oysterriverpages.com and follow them @OysterRiverPgs.

Anathema

Anathema is a free online tri-annual magazine dedicated to publishing speculative fiction by queer people of color on every range of the LGBTQIA+ spectrum. This delightfully imaginative mag shares the weird, the surreal, and the fabulous from a wide range of voices, and their mission to "share the mic" and encourage their creators to hold nothing back in their stories truly makes room for every single piece to shine. They're also open to submissions year-round, so there's no risk of missing a narrow window to get your work on their desk. You can see this amazing work at http://anathemamag.com or follow their socials @anathemaspec.

Taco Bell Quarterly

There really is a magazine for everything, huh? Taco Bell Quarterly is, as the name suggests, a quarterly litmag dedicated to all things Taco Bell… or as they put it: a reaction against gatekeepers, tastemakers, and food elitists, featuring writing that embraces the spectrum of trash to brilliance within the white noise of advertising and capitalism. Putting aside the niche theme, it’s got some incredible literary content and the art is excellent as well. Check them out at http://tacobellquarterly.org and follow them @TBQuarterly to see what all the fuss is about.
